- About | Marty Garbus Pottery
Bio, inspirations, and education history of Marty Garbus. Marty Garbus he/him I love making pots that celebrate the small things in life. I’m inspired by Appalachian craft and music traditions, vegetables, queer joy, and my cats. I also have a deep love for ceramic science and processes. In other words, I’m a huge clay nerd! My Story I started throwing pots in 2016 when my partner (now husband) taught pottery at a summer camp. That fall, I took a Ceramics Class at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC, and I haven’t looked back since. After taking some time off from college, I began to miss the classroom and started taking art classes at Greenfield Community College in Greenfield, MA. Reinvigorated by my experience there, I completed an associate’s degree in 2019. I then went on to complete a BFA in Sculpture with a Ceramics minor from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, OR, in 2022. After graduation, I moved back to Western North Carolina and worked at Highwater Clays, both in customer service and quality control. This experience gave me the opportunity to meet many fellow potters in the area and gain invaluable experience with clay and glaze testing and recipe development. This, unfortunately, ended in 2024 when Highwater was flooded due to Hurricane Helene and has not yet recovered. Since then, I’ve been focused on building out my own studio at my home in Canton, NC.
